It’s been a while since you’ve heard from the epoch48 crew.
Way too long, and I apologize for that. We know many of you enjoy getting these updates in your mailbox – and we all but disappeared. Or so it seemed.

Continue reading “home for Christmas”We had to skip out of Iowa a bit early because of weather and reservation issues, so we spent an extra weekend in Minnesota. Which was great. Except we found out that a tornado had touched down in the town we stayed in the NIGHT before. And we found that out because I had asked the owner of the campground if the river just across from our site was always that high. Which, of course, it wasn’t. Thankfully, the rest of the week was calm and we had a great extended stay!
Can you say, “Field of Dreams” people?!? Well, we can. And we saw. And we filmed. And we took photos. Dyersville, Iowa – thank you! As for the rest of the state, Des Moines and Pike Peak State Park were pretty great as well. All in all, besides the nutzo weather, Iowa was pretty great!
We have hit the 13 week mark! 90+ days on the road, full time with this crew of mine has been a blast. There have been tough times, but there would have been anyway. And they in no way can compare to the amazing times and experiences we have had as a family so far.
We left Independence, Kansas due east toward Branson, Missouri, where we would stay for a majority of the week. Without further ado and in no particular order…
Our 12th week on this 52 week, 48 state epoch had us in the great state of Kansas. I have some history here but I hadn’t spent any real time in Kansas since I got booted from college back in 1995! Honestly, I was never really interested when I was a punk college kid, so I was actually kind of interested to see what kind of fun we could have here now that I am an “adult”. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised!
Week 11 of our 48 state, 52 week adventure found us in Nebraska – the land of the Huskers. I’m not sure anything else matters in Nebraska. Everything is red and white. Everyone is wearing red and white. Except us silly folks from Colorado that is.
While we didn’t catch the Husker’s game, we did find out that Nebraska is bigger than just the Huskers. Petroglyphs. Caves. The Underground Railroad. Nebraska has a lot to offer if you look for it!
South Dakota may not be a place to whale watch or view volcanoes, but is a special place for our family. It is where my great Grandparents homesteaded back in the early 1900’s. It’s where my Grandma, with her 13 brothers and sisters were raised. It is where her brother, sister in-law and their daughter and sons still operate a successful ranch. We are grateful for our heritage and it was exciting to get back to our roots and see a bit of the place where it all began here in the United States!
